In the United States, scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology discovered a new combined process of extracting alternative fuels. Developed glass that produces a current – but not by photovoltaic effects, despite the fact that the mechanism is related to solar energy in some way. Glass generates energy as a result of its contact with common weather phenomena such as wind and rain, as well as the triboelectric effect. Another advantage is that the clarity of the glass can be altered. The findings of a study that was presented in the journal ACS NANO.

If all weather interactions are transparent, it is important to specify that there is a triboelectric influence. Since this tends to be a depreciatingly small charge, or it is not there, this effect, which is created by friction interaction of the metal and an insulator. The triboelectric effect has also been used to improve vehicle performance by converting friction in the wheels.

Scientists developed "smart glass," which consists of several layers. The engine, which is located on the outer ground, receives a positive charge from the rain that happens as a result of frictional falling drops of air. This is accomplished by using polymer pyramids of 5 nm in size to produce a hydrophobic surface on ITO glass (glass conductive).

The second part is a geometry that consists of two thin plates separated by micro springs. The triboelectric effect produces energy as the wind friction – and the layers are squeezed together.

According to American scientists, 1 m2 could produce about 130 milliwatts of electricity. This is equal to the capacity of a 42-centimeter solar battery, which is poor enough. This development is likely to fit seamlessly into the windshield of a car, producing power from the wind and rain pressure when driving.
