Tesla and SolarCity, the two largest green and clean energy firms in the United States, have completed work on the Tau Island electrification scheme. Elon Musk, a well-known American businessman, is the CEO of both firms. SolarCity is the second largest installer of photovoltaic systems (solar panels) in the United States, and it has been a pioneer in California for over a decade.

Ta‘ is the largest island in the Manu's group, located about 110 kilometers from Tutuila Island and covering 45 square kilometers. It is part of American Samoa. The island's population is estimated to be around 1,000 residents.

According to a SolarCity official, the company was able to offer uninterrupted electricity to the entire island's population as well as all business facilities in the region. This result was obtained by the construction of 5,328 solar panels and a 60 electrochemical cell accumulator device. As a result, the primary issue that local residents faced – electricity – was resolved. Since the island of Tau is situated 6000 kilometers off the coast of the United States, water, food, and other supplies must be transported by ship. Fuel delivery by ship to the island for diesel generators was always irregular, causing problems with electricity generation stability.

The condition has improved dramatically as a result of Tesla and SolarCity's efforts. Residents of the island now have a steady and sustainable supply of electricity, with solar panels providing power during the day and an energy storage facility providing power at night. A 1.5 MW performance-built photovoltaic power plant with 60 Tesla batteries will provide 6 MWh of electricity. It's worth mentioning that the whole process took relatively little time – just one year from design to commissioning. It allowed the island's entire infrastructure to be powered, including hospitals, schools, universities, a fire department, and a police station (not to mention the businesses and residents).

There's still the global aspect to consider. For businesses and residents, the cost of one kilowatt of "solar" electricity is slightly less than the cost of "diesel" energy. As a result, it is yet another benefit of such programs for the residents of this lovely island.
